Spring Concerts 2018

The Penobscot Bay Singers and Mt. View Chamber Singers present a Spring Concert. The Penobscot Bay Singers will peform Randal Thompson’s “A Testament for Freedom” featuring the writings of Thomas Jefferson. The composition was written in 1943 to celebrate Jefferson’s bicentennial. The text, written mostly during the Revolutionary War, were seen as an opportunity to project an uplifting message during World War II. It was broadcast nationwide and relayed by short wave radio to servicemen in Europe.

Guest pianist Sojourner Hodges, pictured above, holds degrees in Music Composition from the University of Georgia and The New England Conservatory, and plays for area churches. Her music has been performed at the MATA Featival in New York City, the Nautilus Music Theater/New Dramatists Composer-Librettist Studio, also in NYC, and Opera From Scratch in Halifax, Nova Scotia

“A Child’s Christmas in Wales”

The Penobscot Bay Singers present “A Child’s Christmas in Wales,” a celebration of narration and song for the holiday season. Dylan Thomas wrote this anecdotal retelling of Christmas from a child’s perspective for the BBC radio in the 1950’s. The Penobscot Bay Singers are using narrative excerpts read by Jim Rose, pictured above, along with musical interludes of hymns and carols of the Christmas season. Suggested donation is $15. Accompanied children are free.
